Job Description

The Senior Staff Accountant, Corporate Accounting ensures the integrity of accounting information by recording, verifying, reconciling, consolidating, and entering financial data.


                          The expectation is that the individual in this role will be eligible to participate in the Company’s job rotation program within finance/accounting.

Company / Location: Standard Motor Products, Inc. ($1 billion, global, NYSE manufacturer/distributor of automotive replacement parts) located in Long Island City, NY

Primary Activities:  Primary responsibilities of the position would include:

  • Prepares and records asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
  • Maintains corporate trial balance by analyzing account activity and completing monthly reconciliations. Posts adjusting journal entries as deemed necessary.
  • Reviews the Company’s external financial statements, footnotes and disclosures included in the Form 10-Q and Form10-K filings with the SEC.
  • Develops and implements accounting procedures by analyzing current procedures; recommending changes.
  • Consolidates company-wide fixed asset roll forward, including review of divisional submissions and coordinating corrections.
  • Reviews and consolidates the Company’s worldwide headcount report.
  • Prepares and reviews all monthly elimination journal entries included in the preparation of the Company’s financial statements.
  • Participation, as a “tester,” in the Company’s internal control compliance effort surrounding Sarbanes-Oxley s404, etc.

Job Requirements

Experience & Skills:

To function as the Senior Staff Accountant, Corporate Accounting the following experience and skills are required:

  • Approximately 2-4 years accounting/finance experience.
  • Experience with generally accepted accounting standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of JD Edwards accounting software a plus.
  • Capable of working as a team player and comfortable being part of a “hands on” team of professionals. Strong work ethic a must.
  • Ability to exercise proper judgment with above average analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • BA/BS a must. CPA or MBA would be desirable but not required.
