Job Description

Established in 1919 and traded on the NYSE, Standard Motor Products, Inc., (SMP) is a leading independent manufacturer, distributor, and marketer of replacement parts for motor vehicles in the automotive aftermarket industry, with a complementary focus on heavy duty, industrial equipment and original equipment markets.

We are organized into two operating segments. Each segment focuses on providing our customers with full-line coverage of its products, and a full suite of complementary services that are tailored to our customers’ business needs and driving end-user demand for our products. Our Engine Management Segment manufactures and distributes a full line of critical components for the ignition, electrical, emissions, fuel and safety-related systems of motor vehicles. Our Temperature Control Segment manufactures and distributes a full line of critical components for the temperature control (air conditioning and heating) systems, engine cooling systems, power window accessories and windshield washer systems of motor vehicles.

We sell our products primarily to automotive aftermarket retailers, program distribution groups, warehouse distributors, original equipment manufacturers and original equipment service part operations in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Mexico and other Latin American countries.

We employ approximately 4,300 people in North America, Europe and Asia.

Primary Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Purchasing Supervisor assume complete responsibility for the purchasing and management of assigned production materials.  Contribute to the attainment of department objectives through cost reduction efforts, inventory management, and ownership of the entire supply relationship as assigned.

Duties:

Purchase production materials and expense items as assigned by the Purchasing Supervisor.  Manage and coordinate all aspects of those commodities.

Perform various assigned duties to assist the Purchasing Department in obtaining quotations, following up on orders, maintaining files, maintenance of database accuracy, and emailing of reports to suppliers.

Purchase items submitted through the PO requisition system. 

Manage all aspects of the consignment program.

Expedite materials and maintain the PO acknowledgement email system.  Discuss any problems that are discovered with the Purchasing Supervisor.  Contact and work with the supplier as required.

Correct invoicing inconsistencies and make database corrections as needed. 

Report major irregularities to the Purchasing Supervisor and assist where possible to initiate corrective measures.

Complete special projects as assigned. 

Make suggestions for the improvement of the department as related to time management, duplication of effort, or any other area of inefficiency.  Look for ways to reduce costs through ordering efficiencies or using alternate suppliers for branded items.

Requires tact in contacting and dealing with suppliers to assist them where possible and to maintain good business relationships.

 

 

Other Responsibilities:

Fill in at various positions as assigned.  Perform necessary duties as assigned to maintain the flow of production and/or paperwork as determined by customer needs.

Education and experience:

Associates Degree preferred.  Two to three years in manufacturing environment with familiarity with manufacturing processes, procedures and flow. 

Personal computer skills, mainframe operations as relates to procurement, related software, and knowledge of purchasing processes required.  Must have excellent verbal and written communication skill set.
