Position Detail:

The Continuous Improvement Engineer for SMP, Inc.’s Disputanta, VA location is responsible for analyzing problems using engineering, business (financial), logistics and human resources related principles while developing solutions to such problems. Develop new approaches and techniques to labor management in order to improve productivity and accuracy within the distribution network.

Essential Functions:

  • Proficient in Process Improvement utilizing Lean Six Sigma
  • Experience with time studies, work measurement, engineering standards and data collections
  • Review employees and department productivity and partner with operations to develop action plans to improve performance
  • Directs or conducts studies to ascertain the best sequence of operations or workflow.
  • Recommends methods to ensure the maximum utilization of facilities and human resources.
  • Prepares cost estimates for assigned projects.
  • Establishes methods for maximum utilization of production facilities and personnel
  • Conducts cost/inventory/production control and human factors studies to develop and implements plans for facility modifications and revisions to operating methods
  • Identify and develop best practices/ SOP’s to improve efficiency and provide consistent output at the distribution center
  • Design, recommend and implement state-of-the-art logistics, material handling and information systems that encompass distribution and transportation
  • Develop financial and operational plans on a daily, weekly and annual basis
  • May assist in establishing accident prevention measures and manage production operations training programs for personnel
  • Maintain good communication with other departments and employees
  • Function effectively at both strategic and tactical levels
  • Additional duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the key accountabilities of the job required
  • Advanced degree in Continuous Improvement Engineering preferred
  • 3-5years’ experience required; distribution environment preferred
  • Lean Six Sigma certification (Min. Green Belt)
  • Proficient in Excel, Access, Auto CAD, MS office
  • Macro or VBA experience and SQL a plus
  • Ability to develop ROI for capital projects.
  • Travel expectations up to 25%

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Management or similar field and minimum 10 years of experience in a distribution environment, or Graduate degree with 7 years of prior related experience
  • 7 years of experience in an Operations function leadership role with in-depth knowledge and understanding of supply chain management, lean methodology, production planning, quality management systems
  • Familiarity with various JDE (mainframe) system and Warehouse Management systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point)
  • Fundamental knowledge/experience in EHS to drive zero injury plans with a proactive approach

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience with voice based picking systems. 
  • Experience in productions environments utilizing Engineered Labor Standards. 
  • Advanced degree in management
  • Experience in the following fields of Operational Excellence: understanding of lean principals,



  • Regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands or fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • Regularly/Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly/Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold & heat, risk of electrical shock, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
