Associate Director of Marketing Services (ADMS), Engine Management Division


Marketing Services Mission

Provide world class marketing support to our sales teams and customers across all channels. Develop and implement external marketing programs that provide real value to our channel partners to enhance SMP market leadership.


Job Summary

Responsible for planning, development and implementation of SMP marketing strategies, marketing communications, and public relations activities for the engine management division (EMD), as well as for select corporate initiatives. Directs the efforts of the marketing services staff and coordinates at the strategic and tactical levels with the other departments in the organization and works with agencies and service providers. Demonstrates a real understanding of our customers, sales groups, and the Auto Care industry as a whole.


Primary Relationships

The ADMS reports to the Director of Marketing Services and supports SMP field sales forces and customers across all market channels. The DMS regularly participates in the preparation of Board of Directors presentations interacting with the CEO, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, VP Engine Management, and other division VPs.


Principle Responsibilities

Marketing, communications, graphic design and public relations

  1. Responsible for creating, implementing and measuring the success of:
  2. a comprehensive marketing, communications and public relations program that will enhance SMP EMD brand and corporate image and position within the marketplace
  3. all EMD marketing, communications and public relations activities and materials including print and digital publications, online and social media, media relations, etc.
  4. marketing support material – develop and produce brand/corporate marketing and product support material for all customer channels; including technical, product, and promotional in the form of flyers, brochures, bulletins; print and digital – planning, creative, through production
  5. Facilitate communication of SMP’s desired image and market position, ensuring consistent communication to all stakeholders, internal and external
  6. Responsible for customer-facing communications including bulletins, customer letters, and a broad level of support material
  7. Responsible for editorial direction, design, production and distribution of all publications, brochures and bulletins
  8. Act as SMPs media representative, coordinate media interest in SMP and ensure regular contact with target media and appropriate response to media requests
  9. Media/Advertising – develop and manage the creative for SMP EMD national communications program including media planning and implementation
  10. Press Releases – develop strategy, creative and placement for regular brand and corporate releases
  11. Coordinate the appearance and use of SMP’s print and electronic materials such as letterhead, use of logo, brochures, etc.
  12. Develop, coordinate and oversee programs, technical assistance and resource materials to assist all market channels in the marketing, communications and positioning of their activities.
  13. EMD brand development – strategic development including the promotion and communication of legacy brands, and the launch, support and marketing of new brands
  14. SMP web presence – manage the SMP online portfolio including the enhancement and strategic redevelopment of SMP corporate and brand websites and eCatalog on a broad corporate level
  15. Web content – develop marketing and product support content for SMP corporate and brand websites,
  16. Rich content – including features and benefits for brand eCatalogs, and development and management of the ever-growing SMP video library
  17. Promotions – develop product and brand promotions, including support material, and measure effectiveness
  18. Executive presentations – assist in the development and support for executive presentations including annual BOD strategy presentations, Customer Top 2 Top Meetings, SMP annual report, etc.
  19. Social media – produce creative and analytics for social presence of SMP EMD brands across numerous social platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn.
  20. Lead projects as required for special event marketing such as trade shows, 100th anniversary program, etc.
  21. Trade show support – including national booth design and development
  22. Promotional items – design and development of appropriate promotional items within budget to support our brands at a field level
  23. Literature distribution – manage the EMD and corporate literature inventory with the SMP literature distribution facility


Planning and budgeting

  1. Responsible for achieving SMP’s marketing/communications/public relations mission, goals and financial objectives. Ensure that evaluation systems are in place related to these goals and objectives reporting progress to SMP senior management
  2. Develop short- and long-term plans and budgets for the marketing services program and its activities, monitor progress, assure adherence and evaluate performance
  3. Recommend and establish short- and long-term marketing communication goals and objectives.
  4. Develop, implement and monitor systems and procedures necessary to the smooth operation of the marketing/communications/public relations function


Organizational strategy

Work with senior management to:

  1. develop and maintain a strategic perspective – based on marketplace and stakeholder needs – in organizational direction, program and services, and decision-making; and,
  2. ensure the overall effectiveness and vitality of the EMD brands and corporate images



  1. Maintain a climate in the marketing service department that attracts, retains and motivates top quality personnel
  2. Recruit, train, appraise, supervise, support, develop, promote and guide qualified personnel
  3. Ensure effective management within the marketing services function, with provision for succession
  4. Design, support and oversee cross-functional teams as needed
